X The organization of a World Event contributes to the growth of the economy of the host city, and sometimes of the whole country, not only during the event but also before and sometimes after the event itself. Huge public and private funds are invested and the management of the works for the event is challenging. The procurement of all works, goods and services must be transparent, fair and open to a diverse range of suppliers. Bids and tenders are published directly on the event website and a Business Opportunities Network is established. Public and private partners work together to serve the event and often to deliver the overall legacy targets
A World Event provides new significant employment opportunities before, during and after the event. Local communities are involved in training course to develop new skills and be able to provide the workforce required for the event .New careers are started for the next future. Labour demand is published locally and directly by the organizers. Minorities are encouraged to train and apply for jobs to combat workplace discrimination
A World Event provides an unprecedented opportunity to showcase the host city and the country to turn viewers into visitors. This is proofed by numbers of the Tourism Industry which shows an increase of visitors in the years to follow the event. Wider messages and interests are promoted to reach new customers in emerging markets and to refresh appeal in core markets. The Event visitors who feel to be welcome are likely to return or recommend the country to others
Low carbon developments are delivered in World Events by achieving minimum energy demand. Efficient energy is supplied through low carbon technologies and new renewable sources. Design must promote the benefits of natural light ventilation and thermal mass. Energy consumation is controlled and monitored in any new building. Water Management is also about reducing demand by behaviour, technologies and by utilising alternative sources of non-potable water
The promotion of walking, cycling and the use of public transport is a core value of any World Event. The design is to ensure the compactness of the site, easy to access and to move around especially in Legacy. A cycling strategy might be the right opportunity to enhance cycling routes throughout the host city. Public transport must be frequent, reliable, friendly, inclusive, accessible, environmentally-friendly and simple
The aim of a World Event is to optimise the opportunities to design out waste and to maximise the reuse and recycling of material arising during demolition, remediation and construction. Waste Management follows the steps of eliminate, reduce, reuse, and recycle. Materials selection is of fundamental importance through the use of pre-manufactured items, resource efficiency and promotion of secondary materials. Robustness and protection are important aspects of any new building element; during enabling and construction phases the targets must be set high to balance cut and fill on site and to force the recycling of all materials
Many World Events provide the premises to regenerate a large urban area, which without such an extensive investment would take much longer to take place. New green areas, recreational, educational and sporting facilities, appropriate to the local needs, are long term benefits for the physical and mental health and the well-being of the residents. The inclusion and involvement of the diverse communities are of fundamental importance and an active engagement programme to consult and collaborate includes exhibitions, events, articles and workshops.
Culture is an important element of a World Event, where the host city aims to blend together art, culture and education in a unique mix of quality. The programme becomes an open source participation and a skills development opportunity. Innovative practice for branding framework cultural partnership and funding and delivery mechanisms are implemented and tested to be confirmed in Legacy at national level. Successful cultural festivals are created through public/private partnership to bring international artists with an attentive look towards what is ground breaking and to raise the bar of the cultural offer in the future.
New residential buildings are built for a World Event to be the accommodation for staff, athletes and/or visitors during the event period and to be sold after the event. The buildings are part of a wider urban plan to create a new, safe and mixed use borough and to include housing and facilities appropriate to the demographics and character of the Local Communities. Affordable housing is part of the brief to assure the right social mix. Flexibility and deep local knowledge are fundamental ingredients of design and construction. Developing a new community from scratch is not easy.
New buildings and infrastructure are built for a World Event. The challenge of the host city is to deliver them in a way that it is easy to convert and transform into facilities needed by the Local Communities after the event. The new permanent buildings must be truly innovative, intelligent and capable to cater for mixed activities. Flexibility is the key element of the design, which must be based on a clear brief by the end user.
The World Event organization can reduce the cost and scale of buildings and infrastructure by carefully selecting existing facilities rather than building new ones and temporary rather than permanent. The building cost of temporary facilities is estimated to be 1/2 or 1/3 of a permanent one. More important the future cost management is eliminated as well as the occupation of valuable urban land. Other important strategies to secure a venue’s long-term legacy are repurposing (for smaller and more flexible facilities), reusing (less resource and less environmental impact) and even relocating buildings (for part or for the whole of a light temporary structure).
The aspirations of a host city are usually centred on a new park or a green area to create an exemplary landscape setting for the event. After the event it could be transformed efficiently into an inspiring parkland to be the heart of an extraordinary long-term regeneration project. The green revives the surrounding areas, enables better connections among isolated neighbours and provide the urban value which will eventually trigger private investments along the perimeter.
